The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is a global nonprofit organization representing and coordinating a membership of over 100 national United Nations Associations (UNAs) and their thousands of constituents.

Guided by our vision of a United Nations that is a powerful force in meeting common global challenges and opportunities, WFUNA works to strengthen and improve the United Nations. Post-2015 Development Processes
In August 2014, WFUNA participated in UN DPI-NGO's 65th workshop at UN headquarters in NY. The theme was civil society participation in the post-2015 development agenda. WFUNA partnered with six of its UNAs (Finland and Tanzania to name a few) to host side events on the post-2015 development processes, with focus on peace and security, gender equality and climate change. The focus was on engagement of civil society in advocating for the above mentioned themes in the agenda.

European UNA Meetings- Geneva
WFUNA hosts bi-annual UNA European Network meetings in Europe. The most recent was hosted last summer in Geneva with participation from UNA and UNA youth members from the following EU countries: Belgium, Cyprus, Croatia, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Romania, Sweden and Finland. Topics included the post-2015 development process and how civil society can best engage with EU and UN institutions in the EU to ensure the agenda adopts thematic areas that include peace and security, gender equality and human rights.

WFUNA International Model United Nations (WIMUN)
WFUNA hosted its first international MUN in Rome last summer in partnership with UN DPI, FAO and our UN Association in Italy. Over 400 youth participants (high school and university level) attended from around the world. The theme of the conference was 'Post-2015 Development Agenda' and covered such topics as unemployment for young people, climate change and the necessity of peace and security when working to secure development or a sustainable future.

TAP
Coalition for Accountable Governance in Post-2015 Development Agenda: Broad network of CSOs that works to ensure that open, inclusive, accountable, and effective governance is at the heart of the UN’s Post-2015 Development Agenda, and that civil society are recognized and mobilized as indispensable partners in the design, implementation and accountability of sustainable development policies, at all levels.

As we are nearing closer to the finalization of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, WFUNA will continue, through the programs and initiatives listed above, on training and raising awareness on how civil society and our UNAs can effectively advocate for the implementation of these goals throughout their countries and how to monitor their effectiveness.

WFUNA promotes coordination and involvement amongst its UNA civil society members in Europe with the EC and with various EPs. WFUNA hosts bi-annual UNA European Network Meetings where such interaction occurs amongst UNAs and EC experts on various issues such as HR and civil society involvement along with meetings with EPs.

Peace and Security and Post-2015
In 2013, WFUNA launched its project “Freedom from Violence: Peace, Security and Conflict Prevention in the post-2015 agenda” with 6 UNAs – Armenia, India, Venezuela, Rwanda, Uganda and South Africa. The project aims to build the capacity of civil society organizations, academic community, media and politicians to advocate for the inclusion of peace, security and conflict prevention in the post-2015 development agenda.

Human Rights Programs
Through "So, you want to be the next High Commissioner" and "Civil Society in Action for Human Rights", WFUNA has trained over 80 UNA representatives to take an active role in upholding human rights in their local communities and internationally. Among the participants, WFUNA counted more than 30 representatives from developing countries, including Ghana, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Tanzania, Uganda, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. After being trained on the international human rights system, on how to engage with human rights mechanisms and on project cycle management, participants implement human rights and development projects in their respective countries. Over three years, projects implemented on the field as part of "So, you want to be the next High Commissioner" and "Civil Society in Action for Human Rights" reached out to more than 10,000 beneficiaries. Projects addressed challenges specific of the country of implementation, including child rights and protection of child from abuse (Nepal and South Africa), awareness raising on human rights issues (Tanzania), involvement of youth as active citizens (Uganda), awareness raising on national constitutions (Zimbabwe) and many more.

WFUNA, in cooperation with UNA-Finland and UNA-Tanzania, is implementing its "Effective Advocacy in the UN Processes" co-learning workshops aiming at empowering civil society to bring the voices of marginalized people in the UN processes. The project is implemented in Tanzania and involves UNAs and civil society organizations of the East African Community (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda), including journalists and representatives of local governments. During the workshops, participants discuss some of the pressing matters rural communities in the region are facing today while adapting to the effects of climate change- land grabbing and other challenges indigenous people find themselves to grapple. Special sessions on LGBTI rights were also conducted.

Educational Programs
WFUNA recently launched its global educational program, Mission Possible, in India and in Nepal. The aim of the program is to educate youth in high school on how to enhance their learning, critical thinking and project management skills to become empowered global citizens in their communities. We continue to work on expanding this program to other countries.

UNA European Network
WFUNA hosts two informal UNA European Network meetings a year in Europe to allow for an exchange of information among the various European UNAs. We facilitate networking opportunities among the various UNAs and with various EU officials and members of parliament. The Network also focuses on EU related issues and concerns that WFUNA works to address during the meeting. Both member and youth UNAs are invited to attend.
