Main EU initiatives covered last year by WFUNA are at the core of our development policies. Our three main strategic directions are peace and security, human rights and sustainable development. These three areas work to reaffirm WFUNA’s position on promoting capacity building initiatives that target and empower civil society.
Under peace and security, WFUNA is currently promoting its Responsibility to Protect (R2P) program that mobilizes the public and political will to act in the face of mass atrocities. This program offers a strong focus on human security that is interconnected with development, peace and human rights. We launched our R2P program in connection with our UNAs in Armenia, Georgia and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2011. In addition, the Dag Hammarskjold Symposium Series was also launched in 2011. Through this Series, remembrance of former Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold and his commitment to peace was promoted. The Series has been held in Kenya, China, and Venezuela, with a follow-up conference held in India in 2012.
WFUNA aims to relaunch its Zero World disarmament program campaign. This program works to address development and disarmament on a local, regional and global scale in collaboration with our UNAs.
Under sustainable development, WFUNA’s work pertains directly to climate change, international environmental governance, the MDGs leading up to the 2015 deadline and the post 2015 MDG process. Two of our programs, Youth Impact Africa-focus on attainment of MDG 1 in East Africa- and Go Beyond Fellowships- focus on advancing progressive climate change action and promoting awareness, have been re-adapted to address the current global issues pertaining to sustainable development.
Our final program focus area, Human Rights, includes our Civil Society in Action for Human Rights program. CSAHR, launched in 2013, mobilizes the involvement of our UNAs in interacting with UN human rights mechanisms and other members of civil society to promote human rights advocacy activities and awareness. 13 of our UNAs participated and included 20 participants. Trainings will be held twice a year in Geneva and include a two-part component: capacity building sessions and advocacy activities.
In July of 2012, WFUNA held its second UNA Human Rights Youth Training at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. This week-long training program educated youth on United Nations related initiatives and on becoming their own human rights advocate, tying in greatly with our theme, “So, you want to be the next High Commissioner?” Our third training will be held in July of 2013.
In August of 2012, WFUNA held its third UNA Youth Seminar Training in New York. Participants received professional training for leadership and project management development. Participants included UNA youth from Mexico, USA, UK, Nepal, Brazil, and other countries.
Finally, our organization hosts and organizes a bi-annual European UNA meeting which takes place in Brussels and in Geneva. Members of our organization and UNAs (United Nations Associations- on-the-ground member constituents) meet with European Commission Representatives while networking and interacting with other European UNAs. This serves as a forum for those UNAs to discuss best practices and ways to advance their work and collaboration efforts with WFUNA.

Lisätietoja
|
UNA stands for United Nations Associations (on-the-ground member constituents). Under WFUNA’s rules and regulations, only one UNA may exist and be active per country. As a global organization with over 100 member organizations, it is difficult for WFUNA to know the exact number of staff and volunteers who constitute each UNA as each of these numbers are constantly changing. An estimated number of those individuals who comprise our UNAs and serve as their individual member constituents is 850 people.
In addition to our UNA network, we also have a UNA-Youth network. Again only one UNA-Youth network may exist per country.
The total number of natural members at our headquarters in New York and at our regional office in Geneva is 20 (staff, interns, volunteers).
