INEB - Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (www.ineb.up.pt) is a private non-profit association of the University of Porto with the statute of public interest. The aim of INEB is to provide an interface between academia and the entrepreneurial and health sectors in the areas of Biomedical Engineering. The institute was founded in June 1989 by six institutions, including the University of Porto.
The Mission of INEB is to generate knowledge, by promoting research, advanced training and technology transfer in biomedical engineering. INEB’s Vision is to be an international reference in the application of integrated engineering solutions to improve human health. Transdisciplinarity is a distinctive feature of INEB. Integrative research, involving specialists in biomaterials, tissue regeneration, nanomedicine, bioimaging, medical signals, geoepidemiology, biology, and medicine has brought international recognition to the institute.
INEB’s research activities are run under a large Integrated Programme on Biomedical Engineering for Regenerative Therapies and Cancer, which is also deeply rooted in the close existing collaboration with IPATIMUP and IBMC. Its main goal is to develop integrative biomedical engineering approaches to solve clinically relevant problems in the fields of Regenerative Medicine and Oncology. Ultimately, the goal is to lead to the development of combination products that will improve quality of life, decrease mortality and boost national economy. The Programme is focused on the following areas of clinical application: Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Oncology. It involves scientists from INEB, IPATIMUP and IBMC, as well as Clinical Research Teams active in the above fields. The epidemiological context of the project is provided by research carried out by the Geoepidemiology Group of INEB. This Programme is boosted by the existence of state-of-the-art facilities at INEB’s Competence Centre in Bioimaging.
The scientific activity of INEB is periodically evaluated, since 1994, by an External Advisory Council, which is composed of reputed scientists from Europe and the Unites States. Its current members are: Prof. Andrés J. García (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. C. James Kirkpatrick
(Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany), Prof. Josep Planell (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, Spain), Prof. Max A. Viergever
(University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands), Prof. Wlodzislaw Duch (Nicolaus Copernicus University, Poland).
About 140 persons work at INEB, 43 of whom hold a doctoral degree and 53 are post-graduate students. INEB is a dynamic institute with a large majority of young researchers (79% of its researchers are less than 40 years old) and women (female/male ratio of 2).
INEB is strongly involved in postgraduate education through advanced training of young researchers. INEB is deeply involved in the PhD and Masters programs in Biomedical Engineering at UPorto, both created in 1996, as well as in the Integrated Master in Bioengineering. At the UPorto, INEB also participates in the PhD Programs in Basic and Applied Biology (GABBA), Neurosciences, Public Health, and Biomedical Sciences, and in the MSC Programs in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biochemistry, and medicine.
INEB has collaborations with almost 100 institutions worldwide. The working language at INEB is English. Exchange of students with major research centers results is an international and multidisciplinary environment. On average, about 16% of INEB researchers are of foreign origin.
