EURNEX Association, the European transport research provider for SME & industries
EURNEX, the EUropean rail Research Network of EXcellence, has successfully turned into a self standing legal entity by November 2007. It comprises 48 scientific institutes in the area of transport and mobility all over Europe (EU27), represented by the standing committee with W. Steinicke, M. Pereira and P. Moos. The Advisory Board to direct research consists of high level decision makers from rail sector. EURNEX is the first research cluster of excellence to underpin the European Research Area in the rail sector. Driven by operators and industries and supported by the European Commission EURNEX provides multidisciplinary R&D organised in scientific poles of excellence, pursuing
- Integration and knowledge sharing throughout EU27
- Providing local based services in the EU member states representing the summarized knowledge of the European rail research community
- Fostering innovative, practical solutions to increase competitiveness of rail transport stakeholders and overall system.
- Strategic development for the rail system of the future

KEY PERSONS:
Ass. Prof. Wolfgang H. Steinicke , Secretary General of EURNEX, has a degree in physics and many years of experience in research, development, marketing, and business development in a global mobility provider. He was Vice-President DASA, Head of Concept and Study Division / Think Tank and deputy head of the Aircraft & Helicopter Division at MBB/DASA, and spent 10 years in development, manufacturing, sales, as Corporate Technical Director and board member of Buck GmbH. He was managing director and partner of GRIMM GmbH (SME) for five years, then an aerospace industry consultant and managing director of FAV Berlin. Mr Steinicke has been chairman of the Bavarian Committee for Science, Technology and Education, integrating Science, Economics and Politics for over ten years. He is also coordinator of several EU projects (NOE´s, IP´s), such EURNEX, EUDD, MODTRAIN/MODLINK and a lecturer at the TU Berlin. He was involved in industrial counter-terrorism actions in the 1980s and is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies IISS London. He is founder and chairman of the High Level Expert Group “Airport of the Future” with CEO´s from airports, airlines, politics (e. g. EU Commission (DG TREN)), ATC institutions and industry (e. g. EADS/Airbus, MTU and Rolls-Royce) and Secretary General of the European Research Network of Excellence EURNEX, Co-Leader EURNEX pole Strategy and Economics.
Frank Panse studied civil engineering in Weimar and Florence. After studies in 1998 he worked as on- site engineer in Azerbaijan and the Berlin region. Then he joined Thost Projektmanagement GmbH as project manager in international projects in the field of fibre-optic networks i-21 fibre-optic network and railways as HSL Cologne – Rhein/Main or maglev Transrapid Shanghai. He is experienced project manager especially in the fields of time scheduling, claims management and quality/ documentation management. In June 2004 Frank Panse entered TSB Berlin. He is responsible for the administrative management and the operative work of EU projects. Additionally he is Project Manager of EURNEX Association, the European Rail Research Network of Excellence.

Transfer of EURNEX as an NOE project into a self-standing Association as the first research cluster of excellence to underpin the European Research Area in the transport sector with focus on rail.
OBJECTIVES:
- Integrate the fragmented European Rail research landscape
- Promote the railway contribution to sustainable transport policy
- Improve the competitiveness of the Railway sector and industry
- Providing expertise of the scientific community to SRA's / Working Groups
- Translating SRA into operational projects / joint programming
- Targeted CSA's for EC, ERRAC and other customers
Member of Lyon Declaration in December 2008 and creating a task force between the declaration signatories. This Task Force aims at working on the European Research Area concept (horizontal, governance, administrative and financial issues including instruments), committed to work together on the deepening of the ERA objectives in transport in order to adress the grand challenges and delivering some first thoughts concerning transport related research finally resulting into the DETRA project.
Key objectives of DETRA:
- Evaluate progress towards the realisation of the ERA in the transport sector.
- Identify strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of, and to, research in this domain and evaluate the specific barriers impeding the realisation of ERA.
- Provide a sound basis for the strengthening of the European Transport Research Alliance which will in turn strengthen ERA progress.
With EURNEX leading responsibility for strengthening research institutions and international cooperation.
Education and training of the ingenieurs and scientists of the future on demand of the industry and operational user by founding a virtuel EURNEX EURail University including specific education and training courses. (FUTURAIL / SKILLRAIL)
