As a registered non-profit organisation and privately financed operational foundation the Bertelsmann Stiftung is committed to promoting public welfare. Being non-partisan and independent it does not represent any commercial interests or interest groups. Accordingly, the Bertelsmann Stiftung does not allocate funds for lobbying activities. Nevertheless, the Brussels office of the Bertelsmann Stiftung regularly seeks contact with representatives and policymakers from the European Parliament and the European Commission to disseminate EU relevant results of the foundation's project work and to increase their social impact.

In 1977 the Bertelsmann Stiftung was established by its founder Reinhard Mohn who endowed the foundation with the majority shareholding in the Bertelsmann AG. The bulk of the project work of the Bertelsmann Stiftung is financed from that gift. The Bertelsmann Stiftung does not have any members paying membership fees.
Concerning our structure there exist two judicially independent foundations in the United States (Bertelsmann Foundation in Washington D.C.) and Spain (Fundación Bertelsmann in Barcelona)which are largely financed by the German Bertelsmann Stiftung. The status of our Brussels office as "centre d'opération" according to Belgian law was published in the offical Gazette. The Brussels office is registered under the Belgian VAT number BE 0824208109.
