Practical Action is a charity founded by the economist and thinker Fritz Schumacher in 1966, encapsulating his idea that sustainable development depends on the identification and use of appropriate, intermediate technology in all walks of life; rural livelihoods, market access, infrastructure services, and in the use of new technologies. Practical Action's Vision is of a sustainable world free of poverty and injustice in which technology is used for the benefit of all. Our mission is to use technology to challenge poverty by building the capabilities of poor people, improving their access to technical options and knowledge, and working with them to influence social, economic and institutional systems for innovation and the use of technology. Practical Action works in more than 20 countries worldwide with offices in Latin America, Africa and South Asia bringing direct material benefits to a million people each year and, indirectly, to considerably more by influencing the policies and practices of others. Subsidiaries include Practical Action Publishing and Practical Action Consulting.
