The CIT helps railways implement international rail transport law. To achieve that, it draws up and maintains legal publications and boilerplate documents for international traffic by rail, standardises the contractual relationships between customers, carriers, infrastructure managers and customs authorities and represents the interests of carriers by rail vis-à-vis legislators and authorities. In addition, it provides regular briefings for its members and provides members with training courses and legal advice.

The International Rail Transport Committee (CIT) is an association of some 200 railway undertakings and shipping companies which provide international passenger and/or freight services. 130 organisations are members in their own right, 80 organisations are linked indirectly by being members of CIT associate members. The CIT is an association under Swiss law (Article 60 et seq. ZGB [Swiss Code of Civil Law]) and is based in Bern.
The association’s costs are paid by members, each member paying a subscription which is proportional to the level of his international passenger and/or freight traffic. Each full member of the CIT has one vote, and voting rights are therefore independent of the amount paid as a subscription.
Înregistrându-se, organizaţia a semnat Codul de conduită al Registrului de transparenţă.
