Goals / remit
| Goals / remit of the organisation: |
FERRMED (Promotion du Grand Axe Ferroviaire de Marchandises Scandinavie-Rhin-Rhone-Mediterranee Occidentale) is a non-profit multi-sectoral Association that was founded by the private sector in Brussels on the 5th of August 2004 in order to improve rail freight transportation and industrial competitiveness in Europe.
FERRMED is promoting the implementation, all over the European Union, of common technical railway Standards, the so-called “FERRMED Standards”, the improvement of the connections of Ports and Airports with their respective hinterlands, the Full FERRMED Corridors achievement (for freight, considering only the most important part of the EU Railway Core Network) and the conception of a Great Rail Freight Axis Scandinavia-Rhine-Rhone-Western Mediterranean.
With 150 members from all across Europe and also from Algeria and Russia, FERRMED has turned not only into a powerful lobby but also into a forum of exchange of new ideas in order to optimize the global chain of added value, opening new lines of cooperation and business.
FERRMED is completely business-oriented and represents the first initiative in favour of a European rail freight network that is completely directed towards the needs of Market and companies.

Activities
Main EU initiatives covered the year before by activities falling under the scope of the Transparency Register:
|
FERRMED is promoting the implementation, all over the European Union, of common technical railway Standards, the so-called “FERRMED Standards”, the improvement of the connections of Ports and Airports with their respective hinterlands, the Full FERRMED Corridors achievement (for freight, considering only the most important part of the EU Railway Core Network) and the conception of a Great Rail Freight Axis Scandinavia-Rhine-Rhone-Western Mediterranean.
Before 2012, FERRMED has carried out 3 Studies:
•The "Supply and Demand, Technical and Socio-economic Global Study of the FERRMED Great Axis Network and its area of influence” whose overall objective is to match Supply and Demand freight transportation during the period 2007-2025 in the FERRMED Great Axis area of influence and to formulate recommendations aiming at optimising traffic between the different modes of transportation, with a view of taking up to 30-35% of the land traffic onto rail and improving management systems and railway infrastructures for freight transport.
•The "FERRMED Freight Wagon Concept Study", developed by the Royal Institute of Technology of Stockholm (KTH) and the Institute of Technology of Berlin (TUB).
•The "FERRMED Freight Locomotive Concept Study" which is developed by locomotive and parts manufacturers that are FERRMED members: Faiveley, Vossloh and Alstom, jointly with Industrial Engineers Superior Technical Schools of Barcelona and València.
During 2012 and to April 2013:
•FERRMED CONFERENCES IN SIL BARCELONA, June 2012: “THE MEDITERRANEAN CORRIDOR: SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT IN ITS AREA OF INFLUENCE”, and “8TH RAILWAY CONFERENCE: FERRMED EUROPEAN UNION INTERNATIONAL RAIL FREIGHT CONFERENCE”
•BERLIN DECLARATION IN INNOTRANS. September, 19th 2012: "FULL FERRMED STANDARDS IMPLEMENTATION PROPOSAL. The key for a competitive EU Railway Core Network"
•FEASABILITY STUDY OF THE SOUTH MEDITERRANEAN CORRIDOR (Alicante-Algeciras).
•ACTION-PLAN FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN CORRIDOR IMPLEMENTATION(from Lyon to Algeciras). SHORT, MEDIUM AND LONG TERM ACTIONS
•CONFERENCE IN THE EU PARLIAMENT, BRUSSELS. March, 6th 2013: “LONG AND HEAVY TRAINS, THE WAY TO EU RAIL COMPETITIVENESS”
•BRUSSELS DECLARATION. March, 6th 2013. "THE DEVELOPMENT OF EU FULL FERRMED CORRIDORS -the most business oriented core network lines- THE WAY TO EU RAIL FREGHT COMPETITIVENESS"
Besides, following the example of the “Supply and Demand, Technical, Socio-Economic Global Study of the FERRMED Great Axis Network and its area of influence”, FERRMED would like to carry out other two Global Studies aiming at defining key “business-oriented” axes linking Trans-European transport network to the Trans-Eurasian and Trans-Mediterranean transport networks respectively.
