Goals / remit
| Goals / remit of the organisation: |
The Food and Drink Federation(FDF)is the voice of the UK food and drink industry. FDF's membership comprises manufacturers of all sizes as well as trade associations and groups dealing with specific sectors of the industry. We help our members operate in an appropriately regulated marketplace to maximise their competitiveness We communicate our industry's values and concerns to Government, regulators, consumers and the media We also work in partnership with key players in the food chain to ensure our food is safe and that consumers can have trust in it The food and drink manufacturing industry is the single largest manufacturing sector in the UK, with a turnover of £72.7bn, with a gross value added of £19.7bn[1],accounting for 16% of the total manufacturing sector. The industry employs up to 400,000 workers. This represents just under 15% of the overall manufacturing workforce in the UK[2]. Our sector is an important trading partner with Europe: exporting nearly £12.15bn of food and non-alcoholic drink products a year,77% of which go the EU [3]. The industry is a key partner for British farmer buying two thirds of all the UK's agricultural produce. All this economic activity is carried out by over 6,000 food and drink enterprises many of which are small companies employing less than 10 people. UK food, beverage and tobacco companies invest the highest percentage of revenue in R&D(0.48%)each year[4].This enables the UK food and drink industry to launch the highest number of new product variants(outside of the US, with UK manufacturers launching 49,995 product variants between 2005-2011(up to October)[5].
FDF is structured so that it is able to respond to the issues and challenges shaping the world in which our members operate. Our technical expertise as well as a clear focus on the policy areas that have the biggest impact on the industry, ensures we are well placed to deliver results for our members. We are focused on four priorities: •Food Safety and Science •Health and Wellbeing •Sustainability and •Competitiveness Underpinning all this work is our commitment to communicate effectively industry's values, concerns and achievements to all stakeholders. Food Safety & Science: The safety of our products remains paramount for industry and a top priority for FDF. We ensure that members stay abreast of the advances in science that change our understanding of food safety issues and we promote the need for appropriate risk assessment and reduction strategies by regulators. We help our members by trying to ensure that food safety incidents are handled in a proportionate way, at national and EU level, and co-ordinate an effective industry response. Health & Wellbeing: Industry continues to respond to society's concerns about the health of the nation, particularly in relation to rising obesity levels, and we are absolutely committed to playing a positive role in this debate. We work constructively with Government, regulators and others to help find solutions to the complex issues at the heart of the diet and health challenge here in the UK. Sustainability is about achieving a better quality of life for everyone, now and for future generations. FDF members are committed to making a significant contribution to improving the environment through our ‘Five-fold Environmental Ambition’. In the area of Competitiveness, FDF members want a public commitment from Government that it will support a thriving and sustainable food sector in the UK as a top priority in its own right,by driving clear, coherent and consistent policies in all areas which contribute to this. This means putting in place a competitive and regulatory framework which promotes efficiency of resource use, stimulates innovation and attracts the skills and investment which will be needed.
