Depuis 1957, la Fédération des Epl (qui s’appelait Fédération des Sem jusqu’en avril 2008) assure la représentation et l’animation du mouvement constitué par les 1130 entreprises publiques locales françaises.
Cette Fédération a progressivement développé son action au plan communautaire, notamment en ouvrant un Bureau permanent sur Bruxelles et en constituant avec ses homologues des autres Etats membres un réseau européen des entreprises publiques locales. Ce type de société est en effet présent dans tous les pays de l’Union où on en dénombre au total 16 000, qui emploient 1,1 million de personnes et génèrent un chiffre d’affaire annuel de près de 140 milliards d’euros.
