Nokia consists of Networks (formerly NSN), HERE (location intelligence), and Technologies businesses (Innovation and patent/technology licensing). The company’s goal is to be a technology leader in a world where everybody and everything will be connected. The Networks business will continue to be an innovation powerhouse with a clear focus on the mobile broadband market, and continue to invest in the innovative products and services needed by telecoms operators to manage the increase in wireless data traffic, which is more than doubling every year. Future investment will focus on further building on our strong position in mobile broadband and related services, and strengthening our leadership position in next-generation network technologies that will be important enablers for the future networks connecting tens of billions of devices.
HERE is our location intelligence business. It is the leading global provider of map content, powering four out of five in-car navigation systems in US/Europe. Its location platform is used by leading internet companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo.
Our Technologies business will invest in further developing our industry-leading innovation portfolio. With innovation that is present in all mobile products sold today, the Technologies business consists of hundreds of world-class scientists and engineers in areas that include low-power connected smart multi-sensor systems, distributed sensing, and intelligent interplay between various types of radio technologies. We will 1) continue our successful IP licensing program and plan to expand it to new areas; 2) help other companies and organizations benefit from our breakthrough innovations through technology licensing; and 3) explore new technologies for use in potential future products and services.
Altogether, Nokia has approximately 55,000 employees, with major sites in Finland, Germany, Poland, Hungary, India, China, the US, Russia, Brazil and Indonesia. Net sales of Nokia’s continuing operations for the full year 2013 were €12.7 billion. R&D investments were more than €2.5bn in 2013.
