Die Handwerkskammer ist eine Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts, die eine Vielzahl von Aufgaben für ihre Mitglieder erbringt. Diese Aufgaben sind gesetzlich in der Handwerksordnung festgelegt. Die Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern hat rund 75.000 Mitgliedsbetriebe mit knapp 290.000 Beschäftigten. Ihre Aufgaben umfassen die Bereiche Selbstverwaltung, Interessenvertretung und Dienstleistungen. Vom Staat wurden der Handwerkskammer hoheitliche Aufgaben übertragen, so führt sie z.B. die Handwerksrolle und regelt das Prüfungswesen.
