Goals / remit

Goals / remit of the organisation: VERBUND is the largest producer and transporter of electricity in Austria and one of the leading hydropower producers in Europe. In 2011, VERBUND achieved an annual turnover of 3.9 billion Euro with around 3,000 employees. VERBUND focuses on its core business "electricity" and is active along the entire electrical value chain from the turbine to the power outlet. More than 80 % of its electricity generation originates from climate friendly hydropower. The production portfolio is supplemented by wind power and thermal power plants.

VERBUND, through its subsidiary Austrian Power Grid (APG), operates Austria's supra-regional high-voltage grid which extends over a distance of 3,500 km (route kilometres) and accommodates lines with a total length of approx. 6,800 kilometres. This grid forms the backbone of Austria's electricity supply, enabling the supra-regional, domestic and international exchange of energy between producers and consumers and serves to ensure the stable provision of energy to the underlying distribution grids.

VERBUND is also an active trader on the European electricity markets. Electricity trading within the group forms the interface between generation, distribution and the wholesale market and can be seen as a central hub. The trading activities optimise the utilisation of our power plants and ensure that our generation capacities are optimally positioned on the market. From the headquarters in Vienna, VERBUND is trading on the most important energy exchanges as well as on over-the-counter (OTC) markets.

In terms of sales VERBUND is operating in the Austrian end-customer segment since July 2005. Currently, VERBUND supplies 100 % clean hydroelectricity to approximately 220,000 household customers in Austria. 25% of Austrian industry is served by VERBUND.

VERBUND’s international core markets are Italy (45% share in "Sorgenia", the largest private electricity and gas company in Italy) and Turkey (50% share in energy provider "EnerjiSA"). In addition, VERBUND has activities in Germany (13 run-of-river power plants in Germany) and Albania (50% share in Energij Ashta) and runs wind parks in Romania and Bulgaria.
