- 1978 Opgericht
- 1990: Verkrijgt het Koerdisch Instituut v.z.w. de erkenning (voor 176 uren) door het Ministerie van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap (Administratie Onderwijs en Permanente Vorming - dienst volksontwikkelingswerk).
Activiteiten:Vormingsactiviteiten rond democratie, mensenrechten, volkeren zonder staat, etnische en religieuze minderheden, migratie-integratie, racisme, gezondheid en huisvesting, onderwijs, OCMW, werkloosheid,…
- 1993: erkenning door het Ministerie van de Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie (departement Welzijn, Volksgezondheid en cultuur) organisatie van migranten – zelforganisatie.
- 1994: erkenning door de Vlaamse Ministerie van Cultuur, van het Koerdisch Institut vzw binnen decreet V op het sociaal-cultureel werk op basis van een educatief werkingspakket.
- 1995 Keurde het Vlaams Parlement het programmadecreet goed dat een aantal bepalingen tot wijziging van het decreet van 19 april 1995 inhoudt – houdende een subsidieregeling voor instellingen van het volksontwikkelingswerk. Gezien de omstandigheden beslist de Alg. Verg. van het Koerdisch Instituut vzw dan toch om voor het decreet Diensten te opteren.

Het Koerdisch Instituut vzw heeft twee pijlers; Het streeft enerzijds naar de bescherming en de bevordering van de rechten van personen die behoren tot nationale, etnische, religieuze en/of linguïstische minderheden in het Midden-Oosten, Eurazië en de Kaukasus, zoals vastgelegd in de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens en in andere internationale verdragen. Anderzijds streven wij als zelforganisatie naar een Vlaamse en Brusselse samenleving waarin iedereen die deel uitmaakt van een etnisch-culturele minderheid (Belgen van buitenlandse origine, vluchtelingen, mensen zonder papieren) aanspraak kan maken op de basisrechten, gelijke kansen en inspraak heeft in de organisatie en invulling van de 'Vlaamse multiculturele samenleving'.
