    Goals / remit

Eight years ago the Office for a Democratic Belarus (ODB) was established in Brussels to increase information about Belarus in the EU. Its formation was in response to Belarusian civil society’s search for an EU policy. This mission has been accomplished. Thanks to the support of our Belarusian and international partners, over the first five years of its operation the Office has become a solid platform for Belarus-related activities in the EU capital and an efficient provider of information and contacts between Belarusian “non state actors” and the European Union. Today, the Office is pleased to recognize new but already seasoned Belarusian players in the field of information exchange between Europe and Belarus.

Thus, it is time for the ODB to move on and respond to new demands. The task of today is to deepen ties between the EU and Belarus in numerous areas of their interaction, as well as to fine-tune EU policy to increase its desired impact. It is not exclusively about information anymore: but it is mostly about understanding. The Office will apply greater efforts toward increasing understanding about the EU in Belarus and to deepen knowledge about Belarus in the EU in order to increase the necessary political space.

The ODB was also chosen by the European Commission to raise the level of coordination and communication among EU donors, international implementers and their Belarusian partners. Although this may sound like an impossible task for many, the Office views this project as an opportunity to widen the scope of both the EU’s presence and communications in Belarus.
