Der Verband der privaten Krankenversicherungen e.V. hat 43 ordentliche Mitglieder und ein außerordentliches Mitglied. Die Krankenversorgung der Bundesbahnbeamten und die Postbeamtenkrankenkasse sind verbundene Einrichtungen des PKV-Verbandes.

Seine Mitgliedsunternehmen bieten den privaten Krankenvoll- und Zusatzversicherungsmarkt in Deutschland an.

Dabei stehen die Belange der Versicherungsunternehmen und der PKV-Versicherten im Mittelpunkt.

Der Verband bezieht Stellung zu sozial- und ordnungspolitischen Fragen und bringt die PKV-Positionen in die politischen Diskussionen und in die nationale und europäische Gesetzgebung ein.

Außerdem berät er seine Mitgliedsunternehmen in Grundsatzfragen.

Voraussetzung für die Mitgliedschaft im Verband ist der Geschäftsbetrieb in Deutschland sowie die Zulassung des Unternehmens durch die Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BaFin) oder eine Landesaufsichtsbehörde.
