Die staatlich anerkannte, private Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) qualifiziert mit ihren akkreditierten Bachelor-, Master-, MBA- und Promotions-Studienangeboten Fach- und Führungskräfte mit betriebswirtschaftlichem Know-how für die mittelständische Wirtschaft. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit Unternehmen, Verbänden und öffentlichen Einrichtungen entwickelt und realisiert die FHM wissenschaftlich fundierte Studien- und Weiterbildungsangebote sowie Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte.
Mit 50 Studierenden wurde im Jahr 2000 der Studienbetrieb an der FHM aufgenommen. Seitdem ist die Hochschule stetig gewachsen; heute sind über 1.300 Studierende eingeschrieben. Vom Campus in Bielefeld ausgehend hat die FHM Standorte in Köln, Pulheim, Hannover und Rostock gegründet. In Kooperation mit der britischen University of Gloucestershire bietet die FHM darüber hinaus ein internationales Promotionsstudium zur Erlangung des Doktorgrades (Dr.) an. Auch die hochschuleigenen In-Institute für den Mittelstand in Lippe, Hannover und München tragen mit zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Projekten maßgeblich zur angewandten Forschung an der Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) bei.
Im Jahr 2007 wurde die FHM institutionell vom Wissenschaftsrat der Bundesrepublik Deutschland akkreditiert. Aufgrund einer sehr guten Bewertung wurde die Akkreditierung für die höchstmögliche Dauer von zehn Jahren ausgesprochen. Das Gütesiegel des Wissenschaftsrats bestätigt eine exzellente Qualität der FHM in Lehre, Forschung und Weiterbildung.
Als Besonderheit des praxisnahen Kompaktstudiums an der FHM sind die kleinen Studiengruppen zu nennen. Diese ermöglichen eine intensive Zusammenarbeit während der Studienzeit. Der hieraus entstehende Netzwerkgedanke wird auch über das Studium hinaus von den Absolventen im FHM-Alumni-Verein gepflegt und gefördert. Durch gemeinsame Veranstaltungen wird ein Netzwerk geschaffen, von dem die ehemaligen genauso wie die aktiv Studierenden von Beginn an profitieren.
