Der BDI ist der Spitzenverband der Industrieunternehmen und industrienahen Dienstleister in Deutschland. Als Interessenvertretung der deutschen Industrie trägt der BDI bei seinen Mitgliedern zur Meinungsbildung und Entscheidungsfindung bei. Er bietet Informationen für alle Bereiche der Wirtschaftspolitik an. Der Verband unterstützt so die Unternehmen im intensiven Wettbewerb, den die Globalisierung mit sich bringt.
Europa spielt für den Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie eine hervorgehobene Rolle, da ein wesentlicher Teil der die deutsche Wirtschaft betreffenden Gesetze heute seinen Ursprung in Brüssel hat.
Der BDI setzt sich für die Interessen der deutschen Industrie gegenüber den europäischen Institutionen sowie der Bundesregierung, dem Bundestag und in den Ländern in Brüssel und Berlin ein. Thematische Schwerpunkte sind dabei für den BDI eine Stärkung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit europäischer Unternehmen, die Vollendung des europäischen Binnenmarktes, mehr freiheitliche und marktwirtschaftliche Lösungen sowie weniger Regulierung und Bürokratie.
Mit seinen 38 Mitgliedsverbänden vertritt der BDI die Interessen von mehr als 100.000 Unternehmen mit über 8 Mio. Beschäftigten.
