Our mission is: to explore, describe and understand biodiversity for the wellbeing of man and the future of our planet.

Naturalis Biodiversity Center is a large-scale research facility hosting a natural history collection of
over 37 million objects and over 100 researchers, who are experts in a wide range of organism
groups. Naturalis has active partnerships with the Universities of Amsterdam, Leiden and
Wageningen. Core expertise comprise theoretical systematics and the application of modern
methods for taxonomy, evolutionary reconstructions, evo-devo research, ecological niche
modelling, and biodiversity assessments. The joint capability of Naturalis includes a high profile on
biodiversity informatics and a research community with proven project management experience.
Naturalis is currently setting up a new internal integrated program on the nature and biodiversity of
the Dutch Caribbean Islands, involving a broad network of external organizations and specialists,
Naturalis scientific staff, Ongoing research activities spanning multiple disciplines and approaches,
etc.

Deelname (zowel als coordinator als partner) in verschillende EU projecten o.a. gericht op het beschikbaar stellen van relevante data voor onderzoek, gericht op de biodiversiteit van de Europese overzeese gebieden, en op het beheer en beleid rondom bijen.

Daarnaast partner in het Nederlandse consortium ter oprichting van het Caribbean Netherlands Science Institute (CNSI), een onderzoeks- en kenniscentrum op St. Eustatius gericht op onderzoek in de Nederlandse overzeese gebieden.

The capability of Naturalis includes a high
profile on Biodiversity Informatics and a research community with proven project management
experience as coordinator of the EC frameworks ENBI, Fauna Europaea, and PESI projects and as keypartner
within a wide range of other projects, including LifeWatch, EDIT, SYNTHESYS, SMEBD,
BioCASE, ZooBank, OpenUp!, ViBRANT Species2000/CoL and BioVel. The integrated expertise of Naturalis is leading in systematics and the
application of modern methods for taxonomy, evolutionary reconstructions, evo-devo research,
ecological niche modelling, and biodiversity assessments. In addition, a thematic focus on Global
Change Biology exists.

Naturalis is coordinator of the EU FP7 infrastructure project pro-iBiosphere and various
(inter)national Fauna and Flora projects and has experience in biodiversity change assessments,
biodiversity informatics and international liaison; all aspects of modern systematics, biodiversity
pattern analysis and taxonomy,; morphology and morphometrics and molecular phylogenetics and
evolutionary biology.
