The Institute of Art Studies is the only unit in Bulgaria, devoted exclusively to the study of art. The main goals of the Institute of Art Studies are to explore scientific problems of the arts, culture and national identity in European and global context by examining, atributing and reconsidering the cultural heritage andby investigating the forms, approaches, methods and technologies in the construction of physical and spiritual environment of th people; to conduct fundamental and applied problem-oriented and interdiciplinary researches; to maintain and expand the scientific archives and library collections and to build and maintain databases; to disseminate research results, to train professionals, to perform expert service of the state, the business sector, non-governmental organizations and citizens.
As a complex, multidisciplinary unit with five research directions (fine arts, music, theatre, screen arts and architecture), the Institute plays a major role in the development of art studies in Bulgaria. Scholars working at the Institute are authors of numerous monographs, studies, articles, reference books, etc. The scientific theme profile covers a wide circle of perspectives in the areas of ancient, mediaeval and modern art and culture. Along with activities connected with source research, field work, scholarly documentation, description and systematization of source materials, monuments, manuscripts, print publications, audio and video recordings of artefacts and other art phenomena of diverse profile, a priority in the academic research work is given to cultural and historical analysis that reveals different aspects of Bulgarian culture as well as its specific place in the context of the Balkans, Europe and the world.
The Institute maintains and develops contacts with a number of foreign institutions, universities and specialized academic and art organizations, including in terms of taking leading positions in their work, and a number of the fellows take considerable part in international activities by participating in conferences, research collaborative projects, and lecturing at foreign universities.
The leading role of the Institute in the study of art and culture within Bulgaria is realized as well through the specialized training of doctoral students with the perspective of their active incorporation in the academic community. A vital factor for attracting young specialists lies in the advanced educational profile as well as the perspective of gaining knowledge in newer art studies directions, connected with the dynamics of art in the modern world. Each PhD student is trained according to an individual plan under the supervision of an expert in the relevant art sphere and with the active support of the academic staff. A number of the PhD students successfully continue their academic carrier as researchers and lecturers at different universities.

The Institute of Art Studies participates in different EU initatives, mainly on the base of framework agreements and collaborations with other institutions in Europe, as well as on the level of individual contacts with foreign academic institutions and organizations. Scholars from the Institute are not only members of relevant international organizations. A number of them participate in collaborative international research projects, present papers at conferences, publish studies and give invited lectures at universities abroad, take leading positions in the work of academic associations, participate in the organization of international research forums, consult relevant academic international journals, take part as experts in international art festivals, etc.
