Die WESt als Wirtschaftsförderungs- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft des Kreises Steinfurt ist gleichzeitig EU-Kontaktstelle des Kreises Steinfurt und stellt den Europabeauftragten. Sie informiert und berät Kommunen, Unternehmen und Bürgerinnen und Bürger zu europarelevanten Themen. Eingaben und Anregungen, aber auch Bedenken und Beschwerden werden an Entscheidungsträger auf EU-Ebene herangetragen und transportiert. Die WESt ist seit Jahren auf Ebene des deutschen Bundeslandes Nordrhein-Westfalen, als auch auf EU-Ebene als kompetenter Ansprechpartner bei europäischen Themen gefragt. Dabei geht es oftmals um die Einschätzung und Mitgestaltung zukunftsgerichteter Themen, wie beispielsweise aktuell die zukünftige EU-Förderperiode 2014 – 2020, Geschäftschancen im
europäischen Binnenmarkt und Außenhandel, Chancengerechtigkeit in Führungspositionen, Verbraucherschutzfragen im Zusammenhang mit Produktion und
Vertrieb von Produkten oder Energiepotenzialen im europäischen Vergleich und Kontext, die sich langfristig und nachhaltig auswirken. Diesen Aufgaben widmet sich die WESt auch als Trägereinrichtung einss europe dierect Informationscenters.

Beteiligung an Konsultationen als Vertreter der kommunalen Gebietskörperschaft Kreis Steinfurt. Vorbereitung und Mitgestaltung der sogenannten Brüsseler Gespräche zur Kommunalpolitik des kommunales Spitzenverbandes Landkreistag Nordrhein-Westfalen zu den Themen EU-Strukturpolitik, EU-Energiepolitik, Basel III, immer mit Bezug zu den Auswirkungen auf die Kommunen in Deutschland. Erstellung von Positionspapieren bei den Themen EU-Strukturpolitik, EU-Energiepolitik und damit Begleitung des Diskussions- und Rechtsetzungsprozesses auf EU-Ebene. Der Kreis Steinfurt selbst ist als ländliche Region mit einem in seinem Gebiet liegenden Steinkohlebergwerk direkt und vielfältig durch die unterchiedlichsten Prozesse auf EU-Ebne betroffen.
