Der BFW ist ein Spitzenverband der deutschen Wohnungs- und Immobilienwirtschaft mit rd. 1.600 Mitgliedern und verbundene Unternehmen, die in Deutschland ca. 3.2 Mio. Wohnungen und Gewerbeeinheiten mit ca. 10,4 Mio. Quadratmetern verwalten. Die Mitgliedsunternehmen repräsentieren darüber hinaus eine durchschnittliche Bauproduktion von ca. 70.000 Wohneinheiten pro Jahr sowie im Gewerbebereich ein Investitionsvolumen von rund sieben Milliarden Euro jährlich.
Zahlreiche Gesetzesvorhaben im Bereich der deutschen Immobilien- und Wohnungswirtschaft werden durch EU-Recht vorgegeben, sodass der BFW seit Januar 2008 mit einem Büro in Brüssel vertreten ist.
Das gilt insbesondere für die Energie- und Klimapolitik, Struktur- und Wirtschaftspolitik, Antidiskriminierung etc.
