RFSAT is a research-performing SME organization established as a academic spin-off in the United Kingdom in 2008. It concentrates its activities on research and development through national UK in international funded European Framework research, industrial consultancy and deployment of research results in the telecommunications industry.
The main focus areas include Digital Signal Processing (DSP), Audio and Video Broadcasting (DAB/DVB) systems, multimedia processing and communication, cooperative and tele-presence systems, immersive user interfaces for Virtual & Augmented Reality (VR/AR) gaming systems, hybrid indoor and outdoor (Assisted and Differential GNSS, wireless, inertial and mobile) positioning and localization systems, traffic assessment and navigation, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), networked audio-visual systems for mobile applications and services, mobile Location Based Services (LBS) and other technological areas. Recently work areas expanded into e-Health focussing on medical data management through Personal health Record (PHR) portals, mixed-reality game rehabilitation systems as well as Smart Energy Grid/Metering systems, applications and services.
RFSAT is strongly investing into research activities under European FP7 program in the thematic areas of Information and Communication Technologies, Environment, Space, Transport, Security and Health seeking continuation of its research activities into Horizon'2020 framework. RFSAT has been involved in a number of national and European projects where it contributed its expertise in telecommunications technologies, audio-visual content management for public distribution systems, and semantic analysis of media content.
Recent funded research includes immersive user interfaces in the context of mobile services; latest wireless technologies such as Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE), Augmented/Virtual and mixed-reality systems, e Health services and Smart Grid/Metering technologies.
RFSAT has been also promoting the use of advanced networked media technologies (NEM) in Performing Arts and the Theatre through the creation of the Media for Performing Arts department. As part of this work RFSAT has supported a number of arts events, exhibitions and conferences.
Networked Media Technologies including Virtual, Mixed and Augmented Reality systems, Immersive Reality User Interfaces (UI), Smart Metering/Grids, Security, e-Health and Performing Arts.
The list of programs providing research funding in 2012 included FP7-ICT, FP7-Security and COST Actions.
