Dem im Jahre 1952 gegründeten Verband obliegt es, die allgemeinen ideellen und gewerblichen Interessen der deutschen Vertretungen der internationalen Kraftfahrzeugindustrie zu fördern und zu schützen. Heute zählen 33 deutsche Generalvertretungen und Europazentralen und damit fast die gesamte, in Deutschland vertretene internationalen Automobilindustrie zu den Mitgliedern des VDIK.
Der Verband vertritt die Interessen der internationalen Kraftfahrzeughersteller gegenüber Gesetzgeber, Regierung, Behörden, Institutionen und Organisationen und unterbreitet ihnen Vorschläge und Stellungnahmen.
Der VDIK fördert und pflegt den Austausch wirtschaftlicher, rechtlicher und technischer Informationen zwischen den Mitgliedern und unterstützt sie in allen einschlägigen Angelegenheiten mit grundsätzlicher Bedeutung für die Automobilbranche auf vielfältige Weise.
Vor dem Hintergrund eines verstärkten europäischen Dialogs finden auf Initiative des VDIK seit vielen Jahren ein reger Informationsaustausch und eine intensive Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Kfz-Importeursverbänden nahezu aller europäischen Staaten statt.
