Youth For Public Transport (Y4PT) - www.y4pt.org - is a Belgium-based international youth-led pro-sustainable-mobility non-profit non-governmental organization (iNGO) created by UITP (International Association of Public Transport) - www.uitp.org - acting as its "Parent Organization", sustained by RTA Dubai (Roads & Transport Authority of the Emirate of Dubai) - www.rta.ae - acting as its "1st Honorary Founding Member" and supported by INIT (Innovation In Traffic Systems AG) - www.initag.de - acting as a "Major Sponsor".

Y4PT encourages the active participation of young people to advocate sustainable mobility by promoting the integrated use of public transport along with other means and modes of transport, in order to seek a greater welfare and a better quality of life for all people throughout the world, especially young people.

Y4PT advocates and communicates on sustainable mobility from a youth approach. Furthermore Y4PT fosters employment, education and participation opportunities for young people in the transport-related mobility sector worldwide.

Y4PT was thought up and is supported by UITP and is sponsored by its members and other stakeholders around the world.

HISTORY

Created by decision of the "UITP Policy Board" met on November 25, 2005 in Amman (Jordan, Middle East), the "UITP Youth Project" acted under the name "Youth For Public Transport (Y4PT)” - www.y4pt.org - since June 11, 2009 after the 58th edition of the "UITP World Congress and Mobility & City Transport Exhibition" held in Vienna (Austria, Europe).

It was conceived to promote the development of demand for public transport by young people during their lifetime (generational change) and to close the "communication gap" between them and the UITP members, and thus, to change their perception on public transport.

From the beginning Y4PT has succeeded after the UITP backing, but also thanks to the voluntary work of committed and qualified youth around the world. Among other possibilities, by establishing the Y4PT Foundation, UITP members and other mobility stakeholders worldwide will be able to develop their mission of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

From now the relationship between UITP and Y4PT must be regarded as "an organization within another organization": UITP will of course remain the "parent organization" of Y4PT and it will be recorded in history as the one who bounded for its creation. In this regard, the creation of the Y4PT Foundation was unanimously decided by the "UITP Policy Board" met on October 24, 2012 in London (United Kingdom, Europe).

The Y4PT Foundation was legally established on 21 March 2013 in Brussels-Capital Region (Belgium, Europe) and was officially launched on 27 May 2013 in Geneva (Switzerland, Europe) at the 60th edition of the "UITP World Congress and Mobility & City Transport Exhibition" by UITP and RTA Dubai (Roads & Transport Authority of the Emirate of Dubai) - www.rta.ae - as "1st Honorary Founding Member".

LEGAL STATUS

Initially created on November 25, 2005, Youth For Public Transport, abbreviated as Y4PT, was officially registered on 21 March 2013 as a Private Foundation subject to the Law of Belgium (Belgian-EU Enterprise №: BE 0524.764.357) with headquarters at Rue Sainte-Marie 6, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, BRU, 1080, Belgium, Europe.

Goals / remit

Goals / remit of the organisation: SOCIAL GOAL

Y4PT focuses all its activities for achieving a sustainable development (sustainable mobility in particular) for all inhabitants of the planet, through the promotion of public transport along with other modes and means of transport, which solve accessibility issues and needs (to essential goods and services), for the most disadvantaged and excluded people, especially youth, and thus, ensuring them a greater welfare and quality of life.

For doing that Y4PT strives and is meant to be "THE" main channel of promotion, communication, education, employment and participation for youth on transport-related mobility issues. As such, it acts as:

• "THE" global pro-sustainable-mobility youth movement, by tracing a global growing trend in using (demanding) sustainable modes and means of transport (particularly those public-transport-centered) as main mobility alternatives;

• "THE" global youth spoke-person & "THE" global youth platform on sustainable mobility, for claiming the decisive role of youth in building the current public transport (including other modes and means of transport) since future generations will inherit it. And also for ensuring them a better visibility in all scenarios and for facilitating their communication with other stakeholders related to sustainable mobility around the world;

• "THE" global pro-sustainable-mobility youth network, to bring together young people from all over the world who share a genuine and mutual interest in sustainable mobility;

• "THE" world youth forum on sustainable mobility, to exchange arguments and ideas on “how is” (positive view) and “how should be” (normative view) sustainable mobility around the world;

• "THE" world center of "young knowledge" on sustainable mobility, to preserve and disseminate (universalize) knowledge and experiences (such as best practices, lessons learned, know-how, etc.) generated by young people on sustainable mobility and related issues. In this sense, Y4PT promotes research and innovation initiatives to provide doable (feasible) solutions for transport-related mobility problems throughout the world.

• "THE" global bank of opportunities for youth in the transport-related mobility sector, to act as a mediator in providing job (either as entrepreneurs or workforce) and education (including training) opportunities in the transport-related mobility sector, at different geographic levels, for qualified young people with will of excelling. Therefore Y4PT contributes to the "development (building) capacity" of young people around the world.

One of the Y4PT’s main goals is to ensure that young people have legitimate and effective rights to deliberate and vote on transport-related mobility issues at all levels and in all scenarios, since they are currently an important category of public transport users (mobility actors above all) and they are heirs of all decisions taken by adults at present time.

Y4PT addresses issues in two ways:

• On the one hand, from the “demand side” and hence “consumers”: How can young people's ideas help to improve sustainable mobility?
• On the other hand, from the “supply side” and therefore “producers”: How can sustainable mobility turn people’s lives (especially youth’s ones) more affordable?

VISION

“ Building better means and modes of transport from a youth approach, and thus, contributing to a sustainable mobility around the world. “

MISSION

“ Developing real opportunities through which young people from all over the world can carry out their ideas on sustainable mobility.”

NATURE

Y4PT is an international, civil, youth-led, non-for-profit (non-profit), non-governmental, voluntary, charitable, transparent, pluralist, altruistic, solidary, autonomous, independent and educational organization, with cooperative identity and non-political general interest, which does not discriminate in terms of race, color, creed, religion, nationality, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

Activities

Main EU initiatives covered the year before by activities falling under the scope of the Transparency Register:

ACTIVITIES

To achieve its social goal, Y4PT may, among others, carry out the following activities:

• To organize on-site/face-to-face parliaments ("Y4PT Youth Parliaments on Sustainable Mobility"), where young people dwell on sustainable mobility. Also to encourage virtual discussion spaces by using current information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as Internet ("Y4PT Website: www.y4pt.org" and "Forumatter Website: www.forumatter.org").

• To reward and prize best ideas and practices involving young people as agents of change in favor of sustainable mobility ("Y4PT Pro-Sustainable-Mobility Youth Awards").

• To create and strengthen cooperation agreements ("partnership for development") with local, regional and international organizations focused on sustainable mobility and/or youth ("Y4PT Youth Advocacy For Sustainable Mobility").

• To promote training programs for young people for turning them into better mobility actors ("Y4PT Youth Training on Sustainable Mobility").

• To foster the production and dissemination of knowledge on sustainable mobility from the creative and innovative point of view of youth ("Y4PT U-TH Know-How," and "Y4PT Youth Labs on Sustainable Mobility").

• To promote academic and professional exchange programs at any geographic level for qualified young people with real interest in sustainable mobility ("Y4PT Youth Job Bank": www.employouth.org ).

• To perform “spare-time” activities as a more effective way to spread youth’s message on sustainable mobility ("Y4PT Pro-Sustainable-Mobility Youth Flash Mobs " and "Y4PT caPTure Photo and Video Contest on Sustainable Mobility").

• To participate at different third-party-organized events around the world centered on sustainable mobility and/or youth.

For Y4PT is a core issue to contribute with global sustainable development, particularly sustainable mobility from youth approach, often undervalued and rejected. Y4PT sees in young people a great dormant potential, that adults have not taken complete advantage for solving current problems of modern life. Y4PT will be socially profitable but also financially viable at the same time to carry out all its activities (achieving balance between both sides is a target).

Y4PT is aware of the transversality of the concept of mobility in the framework of sustainable development and thus, it may incidentally deal with other issues such as social inclusion and cohesion, inter-culturalism, conservationism, architecture, urban planning, gender equality, good governance, employment, active citizenship, health, food security, climate change, humanitarian assistance, trade fair, among other priorities of current life.
