Goals / remit

Goals / remit of the organisation: The purpose of the NWU (UAW Local 1981) is to promote and protect the rights, interests, and economic advancement of members; to organize writers to improve professional working conditions through collective bargaining action; and to provide professional services to members.

The NWU represent the interests of the full range of writing communities in the US. These include writers of diverse cultural, ethnic, racial and religious heritage; writers of all sexual/gender orientations; writers with disabilities; and writers at all levels of income and commercial success.

The NWU is a national amalgamated union, Local 1981, of the United Auto Workers (UAW), and as a local of the UAW is affiliated with the AFL-CIO. The NWU is a member organization of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the International Authors Forum (IAF), and the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO).
