Le domaine d'études et de recherches de l'IERI couvre l'ensemble des relations internationales dans leurs différents aspects, économiques, politiques, stratégiques et de sécurité. Ces études s'articulent autour de trois axes :
- l'analyse des stratégies politiques et militaires avec une attention particulière pour la Politique Étrangère et de Sécurité Commune (PESC) de l'UE et les relations euro-atlantiques.
- l'analyse des pays d'Europe Centrale (PECO), de la Fédération de Russie et des pays D'Asie Centrale.
- les formes d'intégration régionales : l'APEC, l'ASEAN, les pays d'Asie-Pacifique MERCOSUR, les pays d'Amérique Latine et les pays du Maghreb/Machrek.

Les activités de l'Institut Européen des Relations Internationales répondent à un besoin de formation interdisciplinaire ressenti. L'un des thèmes d'approfondissement de l'ADE concerne l'avenir de l'Union Européenne dans le cadre des relations internationales, et se situe dans la perspective d'action du Services Européen pour l'Action Extérieure. Au tournant des changements politiques et institutionnels en cours, des besoins multiples apparaissent en ce qui concerne l’analyse diplomatique, géopolitique et stratégique. C’est pourquoi tout effort d’initiation et d’approfondissement sur les stratégies contemporaines est indispensable à une meilleure connaissance et aux intérêts des institutions européennes. C'est dans cette direction qu'est orientée la formation de l'Academia Diplomatica Europaea, l'outil de formation de l'IERI.
