The Health Effects Institute is an independent, nonprofit organization established in 1980 to be an authoritative and impartial source of high-quality science regarding the effects of air pollution on human health. Through nearly 300 research projects in the U.S., Europe, Asia and elsewhere, HEI has advanced scientific knowledge on a range of air pollution issues relevant to regulatory and other actions to improve air quality.

HEI does not conduct issue advocacy, adopt positions on policy questions or represent the interests or views of any outside parties. Its mission is to generate credible scientific information on the health risks associated with various kinds of air pollutants. Through invited participation on consultative committees and other opportunities for briefings and presentations, the Institute’s senior staff will from time to time convey findings from HEI’s scientific programs to public authorities at the European and national government levels.
