The Law Society is the representative body for over 145,000 solicitors in England and Wales. The Law Society negotiates on behalf of the profession and makes representation to regulators and government, including the EU institutions.
Two other bodies are part of the Law Society but operate independently. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) regulates solicitors in England and Wales, as well as registered European lawyers and registered foreign lawyers. Established in January 2007, it is the independent regulatory arm of the Law Society dealing with all regulatory and disciplinary matters, and setting, monitoring and enforcing standards for solicitors across England and Wales. It acts solely in the public interest. The Legal Complaints Service (LCS) is an independent body handling complaints against solicitors. The functions of the LCS will by law pass to a new body, “the Office of Legal Complaints" (which will assume control of all complaints handling against all lawyers e.g. Barristers and Solicitors in England and Wales) in late 2010 following which the LCS will be closed.

The Law Society’s representational activities at the EU level focus primarily on issues that affect the regulation of the legal profession and the way in which lawyers practise. In particular, these include the Directives on lawyers, legislation on the provision of services, competition law as it applies to professional services, international trade in services, anti-money laundering legislation and policy that impacts on questions of deontology.
The Law Society’s activities also cover other areas of EU legal policy that are pertinent to solicitors’ areas of practice and to the advice they give to their clients. This includes a broad range of policy areas including civil law, company law and financial services, competition law, criminal law, consumer law, employment law, environment law, family law, intellectual property law, and tax law.

The Law Society is a member of the UK delegation to the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE). The Society’s memberships include the International Bar Association, Union Internationale des Avocats, International Financial Services London, European Services Forum (ESF), LawAsia, Commonwealth Lawyers Association, the UK India Business Council and the China Britain Business Council.
The Law Society’s Brussels office is a member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium. All staff working in the Brussels office involved in making representations to the EU institutions are members of the Society of European Affairs Professionals.

This figure represents a proportion of the Law Society’s contribution to the operation of its Brussels office, which is operated jointly with the Law Society of Scotland and the Law Society of Northern Ireland. It is estimated according to the amount of staff time and other resources dedicated to the direct lobbying of the EU institutions. Other activities of the Brussels office, such the publication of information material to the solicitors’ profession and the organisation of events for practitioners have not been included. Other representational activities not directed to the EU institutions have not been included.
