Goals / remit of the organisation: Access Info Europe is a human rights organisation dedicated to promoting and protecting the right of access to information in Europe as a tool for defending civil liberties and human rights, for facilitating public participation in decision-making and for holding governments and intergovernmental bodies accountable.

Access Info's mission is that the right of access to information be enshrined in law and work in practice.

Activities

Main EU initiatives covered the year before by activities falling under the scope of the Transparency Register:


Access Info Europe acts to promote and protect the right of access to information (freedom of information).

This includes the right of access to EU documents as established by Article 15 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

The relevant EU legal framework includes:
* Regulation 1049/2001 on Access to EU documents
* Directive 2003/98/EC on the re-use of public sector information
* Directive 95/46/EC on personal data protection

As a human rights organisation we also join other actions in promotion of human rights, including the right to freedom of expression, the right to privacy, and other rights affected by EU rules, policies and practices. Access Info also supports initiatives to increase public participation in decision-making at the EU level.

SPECIFIC ADVOCACY AND LOBBYING ACTIVITIES
* Campaign directed at MEPs and the Council of the EU regarding proposed reforms to the EU's access to documents rules - Access Info is calling for a stronger rather than more limited legal framework for the right of access to documents and information. * Access Info Europe is engaged in campaigns to reform the EU Transparency Register, to re-balance expert groups in the European Commission, and to strengthen ethics regulation in the EU (as part of ALTER-EU)
* Access Info Europe regularly files information requests with the EU on a range of topics and publishes the results. Recent reports can be found here: http://www.access-info.org/en/european-union
* Access Info is won a litigation against the Council before the General Court in a case in seeking to access documents relating to reform of the EU's access to documents rules. Access Info operates on the bases of grants and donations. We do not accept anonymous donations over 100 Euros.
