Der HDE ist Arbeitgeber- und Wirtschaftsverband, Interessenvertretung und Dienstleister für den gesamten Einzelhandel:

Der Einzelhandel ist einer der drei größten Wirtschaftszweige in Deutschland. Der HDE hat 100.000 Mitgliedsunternehmen aller Branchen, Standorte und Größenklassen, die gemeinsam etwa 300 Milliarden Euro Umsatz im Jahr erwirtschaften. Der HDE vertritt die Interessen des Einzelhandels in Deutschland wie in der Europäischen Union.

- Begleitet und gestaltet wichtige, handelsrelevante Gesetzgebung in Bereichen wie Binnenmarkt und Verbraucherschutz, Lebensmittel- und Umweltpolitik, Zahlungssysteme, Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme, Arbeit und Soziales, Mittelstands- und Steuerpolitik
- Arbeitet eng mit dem europäischen Dachverband des Handels EuroCommerce zusammen
- Ist kompetenter Ansprechpartner für politische Entscheidungsträger in allen handelsrelevanten Bereichen
- Stellt für die HDE-Mitgliedsunternehmen aktuelle und für die Unternehmenspraxis relevante Informationen zu EU-Themen zusammen
- Bietet den Mitgliedsunternehmen verschiedene Dienstleistungen an, organisiert Veranstaltungen, stellt individuelle Kontakte zu Entscheidern auf EU-Ebene her
