In der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft haben sich 18 naturwissenschaftlich-technische und medizinisch-biologische Forschungszentren zusammengeschlossen. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, langfristige Forschungsziele des Staates und der Gesellschaft zu verfolgen. Die Gemeinschaft strebt nach Erkenntnissen, die dazu beitragen, Lebensgrundlagen des Menschen zu erhalten und zu verbessern. Dazu identifiziert und bearbeitet sie große und drängende Fragen von Gesellschaft, Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft durch strategisch-programmatisch ausgerichtete Spitzenforschung in sechs Forschungsbereichen: Energie, Erde und Umwelt, Gesundheit, Schlüsseltechnologien, Struktur der Materie sowie Luftfahrt, Raumfahrt und Verkehr.
