General features
The University of Trieste is a “high culture institution”, according to article 33 of the Constitution of the Republic of Italy. In these terms, its GOALS are to both educate the youth and promote the development of knowledge.
The University of Trieste has adopted its new Statute on 19th April 2012, compliant with the Italian law on University organisation and recruitment of academic staff (L. 240/2010).
As a consequence, the University is now organised in 10 Departments, where research and education are co-ordinately carried out.
The Departments are: Humanistic studies; Political and social sciences; Juridical sciences, language, translation and interpretation; Economical, management, mathematical and statistical sciences; Mathematics and geological sciences; Engineering; Physics; Cemical and pharmaceutical sciences; Life sciences; Clinical Department of Medical, Surgical and Health Sciences.
First, second (84 courses) and third level degrees are offered.
Educational activities aim at both building up qualifications and fostering a sense of responsibilities in students.
Reasearch activities aim at generating knowledge to be transferred both to students for the purpose of building up their qualifications, and to the social and economical environment in which the University is settled.
Through these activities, the University of Trieste carries out the exclusive remit of creating a knowledge-based society of responsible citizens.
Local features
For its geographical position, today close to the border with Slovenia, Croatia and Austria, Trieste has attracted people from various countries, both in remote and recent times. At the University, this is reflected in the second highest presence of foreign students (7,9 % in the academic year 2010/2011) among Italian Universities.
Accordingly, one specific mission of the University is to network with the scientific institutions forming the so-called “Trieste Science System” (http://www.triestecityofscience.com/eng/index.php?page=centri) and with foreign Universities (see below) in order to foster internationalisation of both education and research.
Other notable missions are to link education and research in Medicine with the public healthcare system and to provide a system of services (e.g., cultural heritage, environment and security, infrastructures, ICT and equal opportunities) to the benefit of all of its stakeholders.

Main EU initiatives covered the year before by activities falling under the scope of the Transparency Register:

Education, Research and Development are the activities carried out by the University of Trieste in the interest of its stakeholders. These activities are carried out in compliance with its VALUES (see above). To warrant the intrinsically universal, as opposed to sectional, nature of these interests, the main lobbying activities will be carried out by sending contributions of ideas to Public Consultations on the European Policies. The transparency of these lobbying activities (contributions are published) is essential to the dissemination and rooting of ideas that are instrumental to the progress of the human condition in the European Union and beyond. Since the University of Trieste exploits ICT infrastructures, its lobbying activities are costless.
