“Jeder hat das Recht auf Meinungsfreiheit und freie Meinungsäußerung; dieses Recht schließt die Freiheit ein, Meinungen ungehindert anzuhängen sowie über Medien jeder Art und ohne Rücksicht auf Grenzen Informationen und Gedankengut zu suchen, zu empfangen und zu verbreiten.” (Artikel 19 der Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte, 1948) Der Zugang zu und Austausch durch Medien ist integraler Bestandteil einer demokratischen Werteordnung. Die Zwiebelfreunde fördern Maßnahmen, anonymisierte und verschlüsselte Kommunikationskanäle insbesondere für politisch oder kulturell Verfolgte und Journalisten zur Verfügung zu stellen. Dadurch wird ein freier Meinungsaustausch auch im Umfeld von Zensur und Überwachung ermöglicht.
