Der VSM ist die politische und wirtschaftliche Interessenvertretung der deutschen maritimen Industrie, der Werften und Zulieferer für den Schiffbau und die Meerestechnik. Die Mitgliedschaft umfasst See- und Binnenschiffswerften, Maschinen- und Ausrüstungsproduzenten, Klassifikationsgesellschaften, Versuchsanstalten und Ingenieurbüros.
Zu den Verbandsaufgaben gehören die fachliche Beratung und Unterstützung der Mitglieder, die Vertretung der Mitgliedsinteressen gegenüber der Öffentlichkeit und gegenüber politischen Institutionen. Darüber hinaus fördert der VSM die technischen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen des Schiffbaus und der Meerestechnik im In- und Ausland.
