| Goals / remit of the organisation: |
1974 gegründet, ist das UBA Deutschlands zentrale Umweltbehörde. Die wichtigsten gesetzlichen Aufgaben des UBA sind:
- die wissenschaftliche Unterstützung der Bundesregierung (u. a. Bundesministerien für Umwelt, Gesundheit, Forschung, Verkehr, Bau- und Stadtentwicklung,
- der Vollzug von Umweltgesetzen (z. B. Emissionshandel, Zulassung von Chemikalien, Arznei- und Pflanzenschutzmitteln,
- die Information der Öffentlichkeit zum Umweltschutz.
Das UBA versteht sich als ein Frühwarnsystem, das mögliche zukünftige Beeinträchtigungen des Menschen und seiner Umwelt rechtzeitig erkennt, bewertet und praktikable Lösungen vorschlägt. Dazu forschen die Fachleute des Amtes in eigenen Laboren und vergeben Forschungsaufträge an wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen und Institute im In- und Ausland. Dabei setzt das UBA auf einen anspruchsvollen transdisziplinären Ansatz bei der Wahrnehmung der Aufgaben: So arbeiten beispielsweise Ökonomen, Chemiker, Biologen oder Juristen zusammen an der Lösung der Umweltprobleme. Das Amt deckt so ein breites Themenprofil ab und setzt auf die hohe Identifikation und Motivation seiner Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter. Das UBA ist Partner und Kontaktstelle Deutschlands zu zahlreichen internationalen Einrichtungen, wie etwa der WHO.
