Le GFII est l'association des acteurs du marché de l'information et de la connaissance, présents sur le marché français : producteurs d'information, éditeurs, serveurs, diffuseurs d'information, prestataires, éditeurs de logiciels, cellules de veille, bibliothèques, acheteurs d'information…
Le GFII permet aux acteurs de l'industrie de l'information de se rencontrer, de confronter et d'échanger leurs points de vue sur les aspects juridiques, techniques et économiques du secteur. Du fait de sa composition, rassemblant des membres des secteurs privé et public, le GFII est un lieu privilégié pour faire progresser la connaissance mutuelle des différents acteurs de l'information, leurs métiers, objectifs et contraintes.
Par la définition d'objectifs communs, les membres du GFII constituent un groupe d'influence pour faire valoir et défendre le point de vue des professionnels de l'information numérique, notamment sur les sujets suivants : diffusion des données publiques, droit d’auteur, modèles économiques, livre numérique, TVA sur l'écrit numérique …
