ZWE is an European independent initiative bringing together organisations and municipalities committed to work to eliminate waste in Europe. ZWE is participating in the international organisation Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA).
ZWE is involved in the revision of the Circular Economy package, including waste package (waste framework directive, landfill directive, ecodesign, etc) but also product, energy and toxics & health policies.
ZWE is also working on climate policies in the field of the internationals COPs, notably the coming COP in Paris as well as sustainable development goals.
ZWE works on other issues as member of the international network GAIA but these activities don't fall under the register.
In 2014, ZWE published 4 case studies with the best practices of municipalities in the field of waste management and intends to publish 4 more in the course of 2015.
ZWE also organised an international conference in Paris in February 2014 and an event in Brussels in March 2015 to present the best practices of San Francisco and Contarina -Treviso region in northern Italy-.
ZWE coordinates the network of European Zero Waste municipalities bringing together more than 300 towns. In September 2014 Ljubljana was the first EU capital to declare the zero waste goal which was used as a policy tool to show the commitment necessary to advance in the field of waste management.
ZWE also organises trainings for policy-makers, activists and waste experts on management of organic waste such as the one organised in Gipuzkoa in October 2014.
Every year ZWE organises the international plastic bag free day on July 3 with 100s of events taking place aroudn the globe.
ZWE also publishes a monthly newsletter and at least 4 blog posts per month.
In 2014 ZWE has had two FTEs -not counting external help in fundraising, financial management-, in 2015 ZWE will be hiring 3 to 4 extra people.
These 2 FTEs work to implement all the actions of the organisation. The FTE to implement EU work add up to 1,4 FTEs.
