The aims of general interest of FUNDACION TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION shall be the promotion, the development and the carrying out of Research, Development and Innovation activities as tools for the improvement of society and for the benefit of the community in general, and in particular for the benefit of the companies, institutions and organisations that have placed, and continue to place their trust in the Foundation and in the people who work on it. According to these aims of the Foundation, a principal one is to contribute to the creation of technological knowledge and its implementation for the development and reinforcement of the companies competitiveness in the technology and innovation field.

TECNALIA is a key agent in the ERA - European Research Area. TECNALIA actively participates in the governing bodies of several European Technology Platforms, PPPs and JTIs (EEB, FOF, SPIRE, ARTEMIS…).
In FP7 partnered in 377 projects, coordinating 81 of them; in H2020 TECNALIA participates in 131 projects, coordinating 29 of them, up to December 2016.

TECNALIA is involved in RTD activities partially financed by the Horizon2020 and FP7, as well as a number of other programmes such as CIP and others.
We also work for the European Parliament.
This figure includes TECNALIA staff collaborating with ETPs, JTIs, PPPs, working groups advising EC Units, EARTO and EuroTech, etc.
In no case any of them dedicate as much as 25% of their time to such collaborations
