In Europe, the exploitation of unconventional fossil fuels, and in particular shale gas, has recently become a topical issue. The Technical Working Group represents a platform for information exchange between the Member States and the European Commission on environmental aspects of unconventional fossil fuels, in particular shale gas. The objectives of the Working Group are: - to swiftly identify and cover eventual knowledge gaps in relation to environmental and health risks of unconventional gas and in particular shale gas extraction; - to exchange information on priority issues and best practices for these projects - to jointly contribute to the Commission's efforts to assess the need for a risk management framework for such unconventional gas and in particular shale gas extraction.
