Commission's Register
of interest representatives improved following one-year review
On 28 October 2009, the Commission has adopted a communication
drawing from the lessons of the first year of its Register of
interest representatives. Registration has now become a normal
step for those intending to interact with the European institutions.
With more than 2100 organisations registered at the end of October
2009, the voluntary approach has worked and made the Register
a good basis on which to build further. While the fundamentals
of the Commission's Register are safeguarded – voluntary nature
of the register linked to a Code of conduct, reasonable level
of financial disclosure, declarations by organisations rather
by individuals – the functioning of the Register is improved.
The Commission now hopes to make speedy progress on agreeing
a common register with the European Parliament.

Commission's Register
of interest representatives with more than 2050
registrants!
A major player joins the lobby register : The "European
Round Table of Industrialists" has joined
the Commission's Register of Interest Representatives. Vice-President
Siim Kallas said: "since its establishment in 1983, the
European Round Table of Industrialists has played a key role
in the history of European integration. At the same time, it
is considered by many a very influential business lobby, so
I'm obviously pleased that it has again confirmed its positive
European spirit by joining the transparency register". |

Transparency ... "exceeding
my most optimistic expectations", says VP Kallas
Today, the French fair-trade platform ( Plate-Forme
pour le Commerce Equitable) became the 2,000th organisation
to join the Commission's Register of Interest Representatives.
Since the launch in June 2008, the register has become a reference
for those interested in the Brussels' lobbying scene. Citizens
can see the huge diversity and multitude of active organisations,
and they can see, for the first time, what their financial background
is. Vice-Kallas said: "I was amazed when in February 2009,
after 8 months, we reached the first 1,000. Now, after only
another 7 months, we have reached 2,000. That really exceeds
my most optimistic expectations." |

Commission's Register
of interest representatives with more than 1000 registrants |
| |
The French organisation "syndicat de l'industrie
du médicament vétérinaire et réactif" is the 1000th organisation
to sign up the Commission's Register of interest representatives.
Since the launch of the Register in June 2008, the number of registrants
has steadily grown. During these first eight months of its existence,
the Register has become an established reference for all those
interested in getting more information about how the Brussels'
lobbing scene is shaped. Citizens can now see the huge diversity
and multitude of organisations, companies, public affaires consultants,
NGOs and think-tanks active in representing their interests in
Brussels. With this register, the wider public has now access
to an unprecedented level of information, as they can see, for
the very first time, who lobbies the European institutions, with
what motivations and also against what financial background.
