The future of trade policy 2010-2015

"Trade is working for Europe's economic recovery by ensuring growth and jobs. Our renewed trade strategy will open markets and connect Europe to the main sources and regions of global growth. My aim is to ensure that European business gets a fair deal and that our rights are respected so that all of us can enjoy the benefits of trade."
— Karel De Gucht, Trade Commissioner
The European Commission presents its blueprint for an EU trade policy to help revitalise Europe's economy.
The EU will continue to play a key role in keeping markets open worldwide and helping Europe to exit from the economic crisis.
Europeans acknowledge that trade is good for Europe and Europe is good at trade. They expect trade to help create jobs, as a Eurobarometer survey on international trade reports.
Who will it benefit and how?
- European consumers will have access to a wider variety of goods at lower prices.
- European businesses will gain from greater access to export markets and from lowering the costs of cross-border commerce.
- Workers – trade creates more jobs, both in Europe and outside our borders.
- Developing countries – access to EU markets on advantageous terms offers them a step up the economic ladder.
