1. WTO Negotiations in the major Food Crops sector
The main objective of this study is to apply Trade SIA methodology in a sectoral assessment of liberalisation of the food crops sector in WTO negotiations. In this study the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) has applied SIA methodology in an assessment of 8 country case studies for two specific food crops (wheat and edible oils crops) in three different scenarios.

2. WTO Negotiations, Overview assessment of the DDA (Phase III)
The main purpose of the Phase III study was to build upon the findings of previously completed (Phases One and Two in 1999) studies and to develop a methodology for use in Phase Three Trade SIA studies of ongoing and projected WTO negotiations.
This was undertaken in ways that involved effective dialogue with interested stakeholders and which helped to strengthen the existing international network of Trade SIA experts and their involvement in the Trade SIA debate.
The main objectives of the study contract were:
- To refine and develop the Trade SIA methodology, created during Phase One for use in preliminary appraisals, to enable the continuation of an Trade SIA during subsequent stages of the WTO trade negotiations.
- To participate in the dialogue, concerning the Trade SIA, with interested stakeholders.
To continue the development of a credible international network of Trade SIA experts and participate in the policy debate on Trade SIA with experts in other countries and within other international organisations.
The studies focused on the following sectors:

3. WTO New Round (Seattle) - Phase II
The main objectives of the phase two study were:
- To use the methodology developed in Phase I to make a broad qualitative assessment of the impact upon sustainability of the New Round.
A broad qualitative assessment of the sustainability impact of the New Round, based on a list of possible sectors and issues for negotiation, was undertaken.
Proposals for further measures to enhance the impact of the New Round outcomes on sustainable development were developed.

1. Trade SIA Methodology - Phase I
The aim of this specific Trade SIA was to undertake a focused literature review on sustainability impact assessment (SIA) methodologies.
For this purpose, the Trade SIA methodologies used in previous/ongoing appraisals and evaluation of specific trade policies and agreements were examined. As a result, the contractor developed a Trade sustainable impact assessment methodology for subsequent use in Phase Two.
