Deductions:

Input tax deduction is allowed in respect of goods and services used for taxable supplies. Exemption from input tax deductions holds for passenger cars and dwellings.

 

Exemptions:

Exempt for VAT without input tax deduction applies for:

  • selling and letting of real property (an option to tax is present);
  • health care, dental care and social services;
  • education in compulsory school and upper secondary school, higher education or education entitled to student aid supplied by the State, local authorities or recognized educational coordinator);
  • financial services and insurance transactions;
  • sporting events (admission to sporting events supplied by the State, local authorities or non-profit organisations);
  • in some cases, cultural services (for example library and museum services);
  • in some cases, supply of mass media;
  • supplies of human organs, blood and milk. 

Exempt for VAT where input tax deduction may be allowed applies for:

  • pharmaceutical products on prescription;
  • certain ships and aircraft for commercial use including certain services relating to such ships;
  • supplies of fuel to aircraft;
  • notes and coins used as means of payment and supply of gold to the Swedish central bank;

With annual turnover exceeding SEK 1 million, VAT is collected monthly. With an annual turnover not exceeding SEK 40 millions, VAT can be collected quarterly. For small traders with annual turnover not exceeding SEK 1 million, VAT is collected annually.

Declaration:

With an annual turnover not exceeding SEK 40 millions, declaration and payment is to be made at the latest 12th in the second month following the tax period.

With an annual turnover exceeding SEK 40 millions, declaration and payment is to be made at the latest 26th in the month following the tax period.
