European Heads of State and Government adopted
the first EU SDS in June 2001. In the run-up to the Johannesburg World
Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in August 2002, this Strategy
was completed by a Communication on the external dimension of
sustainable development. (For further information:
Go to Strategy 2001) The Commission's
review in 2004 and 2005 assessed where the strategy has worked and
where it has not, as well as what needs to be done in order to achieve
further progress towards long-term sustainable development.
Step 1 was the request for an
exploratory opinion from the
European Economic and Social
Committee, which was adopted on 28 April 2004.
Step 2 of the work on the
review of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) was a public
consultation. The results of the consultation can be found on
this website
Step 3 was the adoption of a
Communication on orientations for the 2005 Review of the EU
Sustainable Development Strategy
(COM (2005)37) and a
working document on the
progress achieved since 2001 in February 2005. This communication of
the Commission was discussed during the European Spring Council in
March 2005. (See European Council 22-23 March 2005 -
Presidency - Conclusions)
Step 4 was a stakeholder
conference held with the European Economic and Social Committee on
14-15 April 2005 in Brussels. Please have a look at the
results of the Conference.
Step 5 was the adoption of a
declaration
on guiding principles for sustainable development by the European
Council in June 2005. The Commission had prepared
the proposal.
Step 6 was the adoption of the Commission’s proposal for a renewed European Sustainable Development Strategy 2005-2010. The Communication was sent to the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament where it was discussed in several relevant committees. The Strategy 2005-2010 was then adopted by the European Council in June 2006 and entered into force immediately.
