European Council adopted the renewed European Sustainable Development Strategy.Following the review of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy 2001 launched by the Commission in 2004 and on the basis of contributions from the Council, the European Parliament, the European Economic and Social Committee and others, the European Council adopted today an ambitious and comprehensive renewed Sustainable Development Strategy for an enlarged European Union.

Updated website on European Sustainable Development online today!
The European Commission goes online today with a new website on the European Sustainable Development Strategy including other relevant information about Sustainable Development in the European Union and the world. Information will soon be available in several European languages.

Launch of a call for proposal for submitting national sustainable development strategies to a peer review
In the context of the general "Call for proposals in the field of environmental protection" the Commission is offering co-funding for up to 50% of costs to national bodies that would embark on such a peer-review.

EESC - Public Hearing 20-21 March 2006 in Brussels
The EESC, in co-operation with the other EU institutions, has organised this hearing with the aim of bringing together stakeholders from civil society to debate the Commission's proposal and to provide in-put to the process of all the institutions.

Austrian Presidency starts Council work on the Commission's proposal for a new SDS.
Sustainable development is a major theme for the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2006. The presidency today started the discussion on the Review of the European Sustainable Development Strategy in the different Council formations. The European Council in June 2006 shall adopt the revised strategy for the European Union.

Sustainable Development Strategy : Commission presents new platform for action.
The European Commission's review of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy calls on all governments, businesses, NGOs and citizens to come up with new and better ways to move towards a more sustainable way of life and seize the opportunities available. Published today, the review reiterates the Commission's commitment to continue to play a key part in achieving change whilst setting out further concrete actions for the coming years.
