Environment
Sport has an undisputed impact on the environment. Efforts need to be made to promote environmentally sound practice and organisation of sports, through efficient management of procurement, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, waste disposal and the treatment of soil and water.
The European Union has adopted instruments that can help in this process, such as the Eco-Management Audit Scheme, the Community Eco-Label Award schemes, and the ‘buying green’ procurement handbook.
At the same time, sport has good potential for raising awareness on environmental issues and for promoting the sustainable development of communities and activities. The LIFE+ programme of the European Union can be an instrument to support awareness-raising through sports activities.
