European Week of Sport: final report available

The Conference was organised by the European Commission (COM) on 11 June 2014 in Brussels to prepare the launch of the European Week of Sport (EWoS) in 2015. It gathered approx. 150 participants, including experts from governmental and non-governmental sport organisations and institutions from all over Europe.

 

Following the official opening by Ms Androulla Vassiliou, Commissioner responsible for sport, and Mr Santiago Fisas Ayxela, Member of the European Parliament, particular attention was given to the concept for the EWoS as well as its objectives and planned activities (including communication) at both national and EU level. It was important to take into account the outcomes of the consultation process and experiences from the best practice examples of which some were presented at the Conference. Also, it was highlighted that the EWoS could create synergetic effects and a clear added value by coordinating existing and new initiatives under an EU umbrella.

Subsequently two sessions were organised on stakeholders' contribution to the EWoS. In the third session, three examples of good practice were shared by the the Comité National Olympique et Sportif Français (CNOSF), International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) and Nike, in particular on how to involve people at local and regional level. In the fourth session, the testimonials (namely The Association For International Sport for All, Union des Associations Européennes de Football, Federation of the Sporting goods Industry, European Tour, European Social Insurance Platform) shared their views on the concept and presented how they could contribute to the EWoS. During the discussion, sever stakeholders expressed their interest in contributing to the success of the EWoS.

Finally, the COM gave a presentation on funding opportunities through the Erasmus+ Programme which was appreciated by the participants in particular in view of the objectives, activities and timetable of the call for proposals. It was noted that the next opportunity to discuss and clarify the final concept of the EWoS would be at the EU Sport Forum on 1-2 December 2014 in Milan (during the Italian Presidency).
