High skill levels remain important for employment opportunities

According to the January edition of the European Vacancy Monitor, high skill levels remain important for employment opportunities. In fact, the number of job-finders in the ‘professionals’ group has grown by 34% in the second quarter of 2011 and the number of job seekers who found jobs as ‘legislators, senior officials and managers’ has grown by 25%.

There are recent signs of a weakening trend in labour demand particularly in the public sector. Recent figures on job vacancies for temporary agency workers show a decline in labour demand since July 2011. Growth in job vacancies was strongest in the manufacturing sector (+39%) and the trade and repair sector (+26%).

A special section dedicated to job opportunities for young jobseekers in Europe shows that:

• Despite high unemployment, 20 m young men and women found a new job. 48 % of the job finders in 2010 were young persons, so these count for most of the movement on the labour market (new entrants, job changers)
• The share of young jobseekers who found a job compared to all age categories is high for professionals (higher qualified), in services (clerks, service and sales workers), while young persons are under-represented in traditional occupational groups such as elementary occupations, plant and machine operators, craft and trade related workers.

European Job Mobility Bulletin

According to the January issue of the European Job Mobility Bulletin, based on the vacancies published on the EURES portal, good job opportunities are available for:

• Architects, engineers and related professionals
• Computing professionals
• Building finishers and related trades workers
• Office clerks
• Physical and engineering science technicians

The same edition of the Bulletin also lists the top five jobs published on the EURES portal. At the beginning of January they were:

1. Finance and sales associate professionals: 29.400 vacancies in Germany, 3.400 in France, 3.000 in Belgium
2. Electrical and electronic equipment mechanics and fitters: 25.100 vacancies in Germany, 10.100 in UK, 1.500 in Belgium
3. Modern health associate professionals: 22.500 vacancies in the UK, 10.000 in Germany, 3.500 in Belgium
4. Administrative associate professionals: 16.900 vacancies in UK, 8.500 in Germany, 5.800 in Belgium
5. Machinery mechanics and fitters: 25.000 vacancies in Germany, 4.400 in Belgium, 3.500 in UK

The European Vacancy Monitor provides an overview of recent developments on the European job market. The European Job Mobility Bulletin focuses on the analysis of vacancies posted on the EURES portal by national public employment services. These two quarterly bulletins were launched within the Europe 2020 flagship initiative 'An agenda for new skills and jobs'.
