On the occasion of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, the Latvian government organised on March 23rd in Riga the conference “Ageing Society: Challenges and Opportunities.”
The aim of the high-level conference was to foster discussion among legislators, policy makers, employers and employees, as well as in the whole Latvian society, about seniors as active, full-fledged, experienced and knowing members of the community, and at the same time launch officially the European Year 2012 in Latvia.
Opening speeches were delivered by Ilze Viņķele, Minister of Welfare, and Valdis Zagorskis, the Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation in Latvia.
The conference, which took place at the Riga Stradins University, hosted debates on the role of senior citizens in the labour market and on issues concerning lifelong learning education and improving the quality of life of the elders. Besides minister Viņķele, the discussions were chaired by Daniels Pavļuts, Minister of Economics, and Roberts Ķīlis, Minister of Education.
Representatives of Latvia’s main companies and public organisations, experts from various sectors and active senior citizens also took part in the panel discussions, where members of the academic community presented the latest demographic trends and the courses of action arising from them.
The conference was an extension of the event celebrated in Riga on February 3rd, where the Latvian Good Will Ambassadors for the EY 2012 were presented.
